McIlroy resumes play and quest for number one at Quail Hollow

THE YO-YOING atop the world rankings, with Luke Donald regaining the top spot from Rory McIlroy, is adding spice of a sort to the mix.

For McIlroy, though, the quest for more tour wins – with the rankings looking after themselves – is the main influencing factor and the Ulsterman, who celebrates his 23rd birthday tomorrow, resumes play after a two-week break in the Wells Fargo championship at Quail Hollow.

McIlroy has spent the past fortnight away from serious golf with social engagements that ranged from watching girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki play tennis in Monte Carolo, attending horse racing at Newbury and seeing Ulster’s rugby team in action. Now, it’s a case of getting back to serious business in returning to a tournament where he made a breakthrough US Tour win in 2010.

Manchester City eye Premier League victory with 2-1 win over United

It is finally over - the much talked about the Battle of Manchesters or the Manchester Derby came to an end Monday night at the Etihad Stadium, Manchester.

Manchester City took a huge step towards the Premier League title as they beat bitter city rivals Manchester United 1-0 on Monday with a first-half goal by Vincent Kompany.

Vincent Kompany’s powerful header sealed a 1-0 win for Manchester City over title rivals Manchester United on Monday to put Roberto Mancini’s side within two victories of Premier League glory.

The Belgian defender rose unmarked just before halftime at the Etihad Stadium to settle a compelling and frantic derby that lacked quality but more than made up for that in tension.

United could not respond as City moved above their neighbours on goal difference with a match at Newcastle United and a home game with strugglers Queen Park Rangers to come.

Both sides have 83 points, with City having a superior goal difference of eight, and the momentum is now with Roberto Mancini’s side who have clawed back an eight-point deficit since Easter to move within sight of their first English title since 1968.

Premier League: Chelsea beat QPR 6 - 1

BOSS Roberto di Matteo admitted even he was stunned by Chelsea’s ruthless display against QPR after their European exertions in midweek.
Just five days after sealing a spot in the Champions League Final with an amazing comeback at Barcelona, the Blues battered QPR to boost their bid to qualify for next season’s tournament.
It moved them within a point of a top-four spot in the Premier League ahead of Wednesday’s clash with Newcastle.
Daniel Sturridge got the Blues off to the perfect start with a goal in 45 seconds and Nou Camp sinner John Terry made it 2-0 with a 13th-minute header.
Fernando Torres then followed up his heroics in Spain with a hat-trick before Florent Malouda made it 6-0 and Djibril Cisse fired a late reply for the Rs.

Poll of the day: Who will win the Manchester derby?

If Sir Alex Ferguson's side take all three points they can all-but guarantee a record 20th league title, whereas a win for Roberto Mancini's side will take them top as they bid for their first top-flight title since 1968.

City seemed to be running away with the league earlier this season, and at one stage held an eight-point gap over United.

That lead was eroded as Sir Alex's side went on a run of 12 games unbeaten, and eventually took a five point gap of their own. That lead is now down to three points, with a resurgent City side (led by former United player Carlos Tevez) putting down a marker with a 6-1 win against Norwich two weeks ago.

With form supposedly 'going out the window' in games such as these, it is a tight one to call, so who do you think will win?

Di Matt: Confidence key for Chelsea

Roberto Di Matteo says Chelsea's sky-high confidence could be the decisive factor in the race for Champions League qualification.

Di Matteo's team finished a memorable week that started with an epic Champions League semi-final triumph over Barcelona by demolishing west London Premier League rivals QPR 6-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Blues would qualify for next season's Champions League if they beat Bayern Munich at the German club's Allianz Arena on May 19, but interim boss Di Matteo doesn't want to rely on that and is determined to keep his players focused on the top four battle in the English Premier League.
Chelsea are one point behind both fourth-placed Tottenham - who scored a crucial 2-0 win over relegation-threatened Blackburn Rovers on Sunday - and fifth-placed Newcastle, who visit the Bridge on Wednesday. Di Matteo believes his players are in the mood to snatch the last guaranteed spot in Europe's elite club competition.

Rafal Makes History at Barcelona

While the Russian Fairy Maria Sharapova won over the World Number One Victoria Azarenka on the red clay of Stuttgart Germany, it was Nadal making history on the red clay of Barcelona the same day.

The World Number Two from Spain, Rafael nadal made history to win the ATP BArcelona title for the seventh time - the same way he won the Monte Carlo event 8th time just a few days back and thus became the first player in the open era to win two tournaments seven times.

Nadal beat sixth ranked Ferrer 7-6 (1), 7-5. The win at the 10th all-Spanish ATP final was David Nadal's 48th career win.

After the match, Nadal told the Spanish state TV:
"This is the hardest match I had on clay court this season, David always takes you to the limit - A bit of it was lottery, luck fell on my side today."

Maria Sharapova beats Victoria Azarenka on Stuttgart clay

Sunday was a day at Stuttgart's red clay when the World Numbers One and Two clashed in a bid to wear the Stuttgart crown. Many thought it to be be a hard contested match, but perhaps World Number One Victoria Azarenka wasn't in quite a mood for that due to a wrist injury.

A jubilant Sharapova

And this allowed the World Number Two Russian Maria Sharapove to take advantage of Azarenka's injury and easily ousted her 6-1, 6-4.

Sharapova's win Suday avenges her earlier two defeats at the hands of Azarenka in the Australian Open and the Indian Wells earlier this year.

A jubilant Sharapova was mindful of Azarenka's injury and duly admired her contest:
"Azarenka was injured today, maybe she could not perform well but I am happy to be the champion here this year."
"I was going to use this event as a warm-up (to the French Open) so I did not come much earlier. Maybe I should continue doing it like that."

Bayern München vs Stuttgart Live Streams

Bayer Munchen meet Vfb Stuttgart, Saturday.

Bavarians have lost any chance to win title in this season and their only concern is not to suffer injury until the end of Germany Cup and final of Champions league and to remain in good shape.

The match Saturday should not be much of concern for Bayern Munich, as they have already beaten Stuttgart twice this season, winning 2-1 at the Mercedes Benz Arena in the Bundesliga, and in the DFB Pokal by 2-0 at the same venue.

But on the other hand, Stuttgart approach this game in remarkable form - as they are unbeaten in their last 10 games.

The match between Bayern München vs Stuttgart is scheduled for Saturday April 28, 2012 at 9:30am (US/Eastern) from Allianz-Arena (München)

Rafael Nadal vs Janko Tipsarevic (ATP Barcelona): Free Live Stream

Friday afternoon 27 April, 2012 world Number Two Rafael Nadal comes face to face fifth seeded Serbian Janko Tipsarevic in the quarterfinal of ATP Barcelona / Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.

WTA BArcelona Quarterfinal: Rafael Nadal vs Janko Tipsarevic
Earlier, Rafael brushed aside world number 246 Robert Farah 6-2, 6-3 in their match played on Thursday to reach the quarterfinals of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. However, the score speaks volume of resistance from such a low ranking player to world number two and the king of red clay.

Serbian Janko Tipsarevic, who dismissed Portugal’s Frederico Gil 6-2, 6-2, lost both his past two meetings with Nadal, including once on clay, and is bidding to reach his third ATP World Tour semi-final of the season.

Nadal after recently recovering from his knee injury is play superbly, having lost only one of his last ten matches - and the lost one was the one in which he retired against Murray at Miami due to his troubling knee. The Serb on the other hand has lost three of his ten matches played this year. The last loss was at Monte Carlo when Simon beat him 6-0 4-6 6-1.

Who is favourite - well I should not say who is but suffice to say that the Spainard has not lost a match at the ATP World Tour 500 clay-court tournament since 2003.

The match is scheduled for Friday 27 April 2012 at 13:30 GMT
